VPN Connection Fails - Troubleshooting Guide

K1VPN not connecting? Fix every connection issue - wrong credentials, IKEv2, WireGuard®, OpenVPN® and firewall problems. Complete step-by-step guide.

Is your VPN not connecting, or does it connect and then drop a moment later? In the vast majority of cases the cause is simple and fixable in a few minutes. This guide covers every possible cause - from the most common mistake to issues specific to each protocol (K1VPN App, IKEv2, WireGuard®, OpenVPN®).

The most common cause: wrong login details

Most "wrong password" issues come down to one mix-up: the credentials you use to log into your dashboard (the email and password from registration) are not the same as the username and password the VPN connection itself needs (app, IKEv2, WireGuard® or OpenVPN®).

How to find your correct VPN credentials: Log into your dashboard and open the "VPN Connections" tab. There you'll find the actual username and password your connection needs - different from the ones you use to log into the dashboard itself.

If you paid with crypto, use the anonymous login page with the username/password shown on screen before payment - not an email address.

General troubleshooting steps

Before moving on to an issue specific to your connection method, try these basic steps first - they resolve the vast majority of cases, regardless of protocol:

  1. Confirm your internet connection works without the VPN - if you have no access even without a VPN connection, the issue isn't related to K1VPN.
  2. Try a different server - the selected server may be temporarily under maintenance or overloaded. Check the live network status to confirm all servers are running normally.
  3. Check your firewall and antivirus - disable them temporarily and try again. If that fixes it, add an exception (whitelist) for the connection app you're using.
  4. Restart the connection app (K1VPN app, WireGuard®, OpenVPN® Connect), or remove and recreate the connection (IKEv2).
  5. Restart your device - especially useful after a recent operating system update.
  6. Make sure there isn't already an active connection from another device on the same server - this mainly applies to WireGuard®, see below.

Issues by connection method

K1VPN App

  • Make sure you're using the VPN connection credentials from your dashboard, not your registration email/password.
  • If the app gets stuck while connecting, close it completely and reopen it.
  • If the issue persists, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

IKEv2 (Windows, macOS, iOS)

  • Operating system upgrades: A recent Windows, macOS or iOS update can break an existing IKEv2 configuration. Fix: delete the connection, restart your device, and recreate it from scratch.
  • Custom Android ROMs (e.g. Samsung): There are isolated reports of IKEv2 connection failures on custom Android systems, likely due to how they handle certificates. In that case, try the K1VPN app or WireGuard® instead.
  • Only 1 active IKEv2 connection at a time per device - this is expected behavior, not an error.
  • Full guides: Windows, macOS, iOS.

WireGuard® (Desktop and Mobile)

The most common cause of WireGuard® failures: All your tunnels share a single Private Key. If you already have an active connection to a server and try to connect again to the same server from another device or tunnel, one of the two connections will break - even if your app still shows it as active. This isn't a bug, it's a limitation of the protocol's architecture.

  • Fix: connect each device to a different server, or use the K1VPN app, OpenVPN® or IKEv2 - these support up to 10 simultaneous connections.
  • If the tunnel won't handshake, make sure you copied or imported the entire config file (via COPY or DOWNLOAD) without missing a line.
  • Full guides: Desktop, iOS/Android.

OpenVPN® (Windows, macOS, Linux)

  • Certificate error: If you see a warning about a missing external certificate, make sure "Require External Certificate" is unchecked in the connection settings.
  • Disconnects or gets blocked: Try TCP instead of UDP - it's slower but bypasses strict firewalls by disguising itself as regular HTTPS traffic on port 443.
  • Make sure you downloaded the correct .ovpn file for the server you want - each server, protocol and port has its own file.
  • Full guide: OpenVPN® on Desktop.

Connected, but no internet access

If you're using the K1VPN app on Windows or macOS (version 2.0 or later) with Kill Switch enabled, it deliberately blocks all internet traffic whenever the VPN connection isn't active - precisely to prevent your real IP from leaking. If you just disconnected, for example while switching servers, having no internet is expected until you reconnect. Learn more in Changelog v2.0 - Kill Switch.

How many devices can I connect at once?

  • K1VPN App, IKEv2, OpenVPN®: up to 10 simultaneous connections from different devices - these work with username/password.
  • WireGuard®: only 1 active connection at a time per server, due to the shared Private Key - see above.

Still not working?

If you've tried everything above and the issue persists, contact us describing your connection method (app, IKEv2, WireGuard® or OpenVPN®), your device and operating system, and the exact error message if any - this helps us help you much faster.
